What is your schedule like?
Some of you may have heard how booked I tend to be, but it’s almost never something we can’t make work. I can pretty much always schedule people within a few weeks, but if you have an upcoming audition or some other need to rush, contact me and we will try to figure out a way to get you what you need faster. The main thing is not to wait until right before you need the pictures.
I think it’s also important to have a sense of what the process involves. After the shoot it normally takes 2 to 3 days for me to have the contact sheets posted online. Then comes the hard part: choosing. Most people take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months to decide. Rarely do people choose in less than a week.
Once you have chosen your headshots I get to work on them. The process involves more color-correction than retouching, but it is not a process I rush through. At any given time I usually have at least 2 or 3 people’s pictures to retouch, so I can’t always start right away. Once I have finished I usually wait a day or two and then go back to look over my work with fresh eyes. Sometimes I make minor adjustments, but usually I just send the files to Reproductions. My understanding is that they can turn your job around within a couple of days, but you should check with them to be certain.
Occasionally I have people contact me asking if I have any appointments “this week,” because they need new headshots “immediately,” or, “next Monday,” for example. I generally caution against this approach. While I occasionally have openings in the same week, the real issue is permitting us to have the time to really handle the process that comes afterward properly. Your pictures are too important to do a halfway job on them. Probably the thing I hear most frequently from people I have shot is how difficult it is to choose once they see their pictures. So make sure you plan ahead to leave enough time to get the best possible results. And… if you really, really, absolutely need it right away, I’ll do my best and we’ll see if we can get you what you need.
